How To Deodorize Your Trash Can In 4 Easy Steps

Trash has a very powerful and terrible smell that can stick to everything around it, and there’s nothing worse than having your whole kitchen smell like garbage!

If you want to remove these awful odors from the kitchen for good, you’re in luck! Just follow the steps below to deodorize your trash can.

The most effective way to eliminate odors: Wash the trash can

If you expected a quick fix to deodorize your trash can, this isn’t it. However, like with many other things, easy is not always better!

Therefore, instead of trying to mask odors, washing your trash can is the most effective way to remove every foul smell from it. Sure, this might take a little longer than other simpler methods, but the results are definitive!

Step 1. Empty and rinse the trash can

Maybe it seems like an obvious step, but it’s still worth mentioning that the trash can needs to be emptied to clean it! That means no garbage, trash bags, or loose debris at the bottom—nobody wants trash and soapy water soup.

Rinse the trash can with water to remove the loose grime and debris. Once done, you can really get into washing the container.

Step 2. Choose a cleaning solution

While a chemical-based cleaner can do the job, there are simpler—and safer—alternatives that work just as well!

A simple solution of soapy water can work (better if the water is hot!). However, if you need something stronger that will surely get rid of the smell, try white vinegar! Fill the can with hot water and add a few splashes of vinegar. Simple, right?

Step 3. Soak and scrub the can

After pouring your chosen solution inside the can, you need to let it soak for at least one hour. Once the time’s up, it’s time to get your hands dirty—just as an expression, you can wear latex or plastic gloves during the task!

Start by emptying most of the solution until you only have a mildly thin layer at the bottom of the trash can. Then, grab a brush or sponge and scrub until the grime is gone.

Note: You can also eliminate some of the stuck grime with a pressure washer if you have one.

Step 4. Rinse and dry the trash can

Once your trash can is shiny and clean, all that’s left is to rinse it with clean water and dry it. The drying part is essential to avoid mold growing in the can! So, ensure the trash bin is completely dry before placing a bag in it.

If you don’t need your can right away, as soon as it’s clean, you can leave it out to air dry. Otherwise, dry it with a few paper towels or a fan.

Do you still need to deodorize the trash can?

While simply using deodorizers won’t eliminate the smells, they can help you reduce garbage odor when you don’t have time to wash the can.

Check these quick deodorizers when you’re in a pinch.

Keep the rest of your kitchen just as clean and odor free!
